Welcome
Helping educators and students become 21st century empowered learners
Hours before Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, I was sitting in a house my family and I had evacuated to in Panama City, FL. We were glued to the television getting the latest reports, when I suddenly realized that my school’s website, email system, emergency phone system—everything that was supposed to keep my school community together, would likely not withstand the brunt of what New Orleans was about to weather.
At that moment, and in the following months, a great deal began to align for me.
For several years, I had been a teacher and technology director with a strong belief in the potential of what technology can bring to teachers and students. But after learning more about the opportunities available to students today using online information and resources, and after going through everything that my school and community went through during and following the storm, I saw everything through new eyes.
I realized that much of what I was trying to accomplish in my school was not enough in today’s world. We can teach software, we can teach desktop publishing and we can even integrate this all into the day-to-day activities of a classroom. But it’s not enough. We need to be develop 21st century citizens:
- who are prepared to work toward solving big problems.
- who can take information from the media as well as from various online resources and validate it, make sense of it and put it to good use.
- who are able to work collaboratively to get things done.
- who understand how to connect with their global counterparts.
- who are fearless, self-motivated learners and teachers.
- who understand their ethical responsibilities in this new read/write world.
My goal is to help teachers develop these 21st century citizens. As part of the November Learning team, I now have the opportunity to work within schools and districts sharing our vision and working directly with teachers and students.
